Dental Implants Q & A

Why do I need a dental implant?

A dental implant entirely replaces a lost or missing tooth, or a tooth that needs to be extracted. It involves replacing your tooth’s root with an artificial implant and capping it off with a natural-looking crown. You might need a dental implant to:

  • Prevent teeth from shifting
  • Maintain your natural bite
  • Minimize your risk of gum and bone tissue loss
  • Help you chew, swallow, and speak more efficiently

Because dental implants replace your entire tooth — from root to crown — they’re designed to match your smile and bite perfectly, so no one can tell which tooth isn’t real.

What happens during a dental implant procedure?

Before getting started on your dental implant procedure, Dr. Illes takes several impressions of your bite to ensure your final implant fits perfectly into alignment. He provides any essential sedation dentistry options, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and thoroughly numbs your gums.

The next step involves placing the implant post into your jawbone below your gum tissue. Dr. Illes attaches a small connector known as an abutment to your implant slightly above your gum line. This can either be done the same day as your dental implant surgery or on your following visit.

Once your implant is in place, Dr. Illes may take additional impressions for the lab that makes your permanent crown. Dr. Illes then counsels you on how to care for your surgical site as it heals and what you can do to prevent infection.

How long does it take to heal after getting a dental implant?

Once your dental implant is in place, it takes time for bone and gum tissue to heal up around it. Proper healing is essential to ensure your implant becomes stable enough to support a crown. In most cases, it takes at least two to three months for the metal post and jawbone to fuse together.

Dr. Illes schedules you for a follow-up visit at Edison Dental Health Center to get your permanent crown (or crowns) bonded to your implant once you’re healed. This synthetic tooth becomes so secure; you can continue to eat your favorite foods and maintain an active lifestyle without fear of your tooth becoming loose or falling out.
